NASA Research has resulted in significant
advances in medicine and medical procedures. Future deep-space missions
will require further advances in radiation protection, psychology,
telemedicine, osteoporosis treatments, and transportability of trauma
facilities. NASA’s contributions to health and medicine include
the following:
Microbiological research performed on the Space Shuttle and
the ISS is targeted for new vaccines, such as salmonella and Methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Initial research done with NASA led to the addition of docosahexaenoc
acid (DHA) to baby formula, essential for neural and visual development.
NASA collaborated in the development of the DeBakey heart pump.
Advances in cardiology, mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI), and kidney dialysis have benefited from NASA research and
technology development.
