Research from NASA's manned space program,
in collaboration with the Department of Defense and other federal
agencies, has provided engineering and scientific advancements that
have significantly improved their ability to keep our country strong
and safe. NASA’s contributions to national security include
the following:
Polymer fabrics developed by NASA are used by firefighters,
the military, and civilian authorities to help keep personnel
safe from extreme environments and conditions.
NASA has enabled advancements in space-to-ground communications
and sensor technologies that provide secure mobile networks for
first responders, Special Forces, and other military units to
improve their response time.
NASA collaborates with the U.S. Agency for International Development,
CATHALAC, and other partners to acquire on-orbit imagery with
Earth observation systems, such as SERVIR, Landsat 7, and, even,
the crew on the space station. These eyes in the sky help coordinate
relief efforts for fire, flood, hurricane and earthquake victims.
NASA and the Department of Defense maintain a close cooperation
on many programs, including: NPOESS, HYDORS, GOES, and the Kodiak
Star Spacecraft.
