Innovative technologies developed for space
exploration have contributed to job creation and economic opportunities
here on Earth, including the growth of the semiconductor and cordless
power tool industries. NASA engineers have also partnered with small
businesses through outreach programs to help solve down-to-Earth
problems with their out-of-this-world expertise. NASA’s contributions
to the economy include the following:
NASA employs approximately 63,700 people through its civil
service and contractors, including nearly 38,700 scientists and
engineers.
Work done at NASA has resulted in new products and technology
development. These advancements are highlighted in an annual publication
called “Spinoff” and online at http://www.sti.nasa.gov/tto/.
Over 1,600 NASA technologies have benefited U.S. industry, improved
the quality of life, and created jobs.
NASA’s ten field centers a support local economies throughout
the nation, including communities in Alabama, California, Florida,
Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington D.C.
